Tree of Life Contest

Great News Everyone!

You have all voted, and this year's choice for the theme of our 2011 Challenge and Contest is

"Tree of Life"

We have put together the packages for this year's Challenge, and you will notice several new things about this year's Challenge that are different:

1.  The Challenge package will contain mostly Fancy Fabrics (in dark colors) mainly intended to be used as background for your Crazy Piecing.

2.  This year I have not put in a lot of other Threads, ribbon, trim, beads or other embellishment items.  Why?  Because, other than size limits and background - this year's challenge is wide open!  This challenge is probably the most "challenging" we have ever done!

3.  You'll remember my description of this year's theme:

.  Tree of Life:   I've always wanted to make a Tree of Life quilt!  They are so interesting and beautiful.  I think this design idea would work wonderfully in a CQ piece - and think all of you would enjoy working on it!

 - Now, I'm not speaking about a "Tree of Knowledge" quilt - one that includes Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, complete with Apple,  Apple Tree, Adam and Eve, and a snake.  That, to me, is an entirely different subject.

People have been making Tree of Life designs for millenia.  I've looked on Google Images for Tree of Life images, and while you'll see plenty that include Adam and Eve, etc., you should also see some of the Tree of Life designs I'm speaking of - they are so neat - I hope you'll take a look for inspiration!

Tree of Life projects can include: People, animals of all kinds (fish, sea life, sea shells, land animals from anywhere in the world, birds, mammals, insects, etc.  No living thing is excluded)  Many tree of life projects also rely on various kinds of plants, flowers, and fruit - any kind of plant life, is also included!  If you have questions about what may be included, just write to me at:  carolynatesd@hotmail.com

4.  Because the "life" forms you may wish to include come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, etc. - I didn't want to put a bunch of threads or ribbon, etc. in your package that you might not need to use!  Instead, when you buy your Challenge Package, it will include a 10% off coupon for a one-time shopping trip at ESD to purchase things you'd like to include in your design - that way you can gather what YOU need, and really make this year's Challenge show your creativity and imagination!

The price of this year's package is only $25.99 - (buy below) and this year we are giving you more time than ever to complete your project!  Please see the rules below:  We've only made so many packages, so don't delay - this year's challenge should be terrific - I hope that many of you will participate!

Thanks to all of you for choosing to participate in our 2011 Tree of Life Challenge and Contest!

Rules:

1.  Your project must be at least 150 square inches.  You can choose any project you like,  and the size may be larger if you wish.  The 150 square inches is the MINIMUM size. (Note:  a 10” by 15” piece, or 13” square, 14” square or larger will easily take care of this requirement! You should also consider creating a piece using varying sized blocks joined together to create your project.)

2.  Your project must be Crazy-Pieced (background) and embellished.  You must use a recognizable piece of each of at least seven of the  “Challenge” fabrics contained in the challenge package in your project.  These must be of a recognizable size.  You may add any other fabrics you wish.

3.  You may add anything you wish to your project as long as it meets the requirements set forth above.

4.  Use any technique to embellish your project!  Appliqué, beadwork, embroidery, ribbon work and Silk Ribbon embroidery.  You can use any kind of sew-ons or other decorations and attach them to your project.

5.  When you’re finished with your project, be sure to take some GOOD digital photos of your project.  (The higher the resolution, the better!)  You must send them into us at Evening Star Designs on or by September 15, 2012.  After judging, all entries will be included in an “Tree of Life” Gallery on our website. (please, no prints - I just cannot scan photos (printed) well enough to work with them or see the details.)

6.  First Prize will be a $200.00 Gift Certificate from Evening Star Designs!  We will also be awarding other prizes depending upon participation - so don’t forget to enter - everyone will enjoy seeing your beautiful work!

7.  By entering the challenge, you agree to allow Evening Star Designs to use photos of your work on our website, advertising or other information.  Each time a picture of your work is used, your name will be listed as the artist!

I think you’ll enjoy this Challenge!  Often a few guidelines can make your creativity blossom!

Good Luck!                                         Carolyn
